Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of his transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
